National Napping Day
March 10th 2025
March 10 marks National Napping Day, the ideal opportunity to recover from the effects of daylight saving time. Science has shown that napping is actually more beneficial than coffee or energy drinks, so you can embrace this simple pleasure without guilt. While you may have lost an hour, celebrating today with a well-deserved nap can help you feel refreshed and back on track.
The Origins of National Napping Day
National Napping Day was established in 1999 by Boston University professor William Anthony, Ph.D., and his wife, Camille Anthony. Their goal was to raise awareness about the importance of adequate sleep and its many benefits. The holiday was specifically designed to help people recover from the hour of sleep lost due to daylight saving time. The date was chosen because research shows that people tend to feel especially tired and sleep-deprived after the time change. While losing an hour may take a toll, National Napping Day offers a chance to reset and feel well-rested again.
However, the concept of midday rest long predates this holiday. The Spanish have practiced the tradition of the afternoon “siesta” for centuries, meaning daylight saving time doesn’t disrupt their routine as much. Even the Ancient Romans were known for taking midday naps. In today’s fast-paced world, naps are often seen as a luxury rather than a necessity, but in the past, they were essential, sometimes even used for medical or religious purposes.
Although National Napping Day was created over two decades ago, it has yet to be officially recognized as a national holiday. But let’s be honest, who needs an official declaration to enjoy a well-earned nap?
